Easter Candy

April 11, 2017

Two stalwarts of the sweet-tooth, Murdick’s and Kilwin’s, both on Howard Street in Downtown Petoskey, have pounds and pounds of candy for Easter.

Paul has been making and packaging candy for student fundraisers at two different schools.

“They sell it for the Easter season; I make it as ordered, then send it out.”

“The last weekend in Petoskey was like summer,” Paul reminds us as Murdick’s readies for the ice cream rushes on those hot days of July and August.

“It’s always nice to see the reds and greens of Christmas go away and turn to the pastels of Easter,” Meredith sighs. “We’re really looking forward to ice cream season, however!”

And so we celebrate warmth and a seasonal rebirth longing for the summer solstice and dripping vanilla ice cream decorating our fingers holding onto the cones. But until then there’s still time to enjoy the Easter candy waving at you from the windows in Downtown Petoskey.

Meredith Brown, owner of the Petoskey Kilwin’s, says, “We have and sell lots of stuff for Easter.”She spins around the store and points to endless shelves festooned with confectionery gold: Chocolate bunnies, jelly beans, brittle, and everything sweet. There are Easter baskets wrapped for someone looking at a quick and easy gift. There are family assortment boxes, windowed boxes of twelve to fourteen pieces, and virtually any product one could imagine for the Easter season.

“We’ve probably sent out sixty boxes already, and time is short, but we can still send,” Meredith notes.  “We also have Harvey, here,” as she points to a twenty-two-pound chocolate rabbit. “It has a two-inch shell and six inches of solid chocolate at the bottom.” The rabbit stands approximately three feet tall.
