Downtown Petoskey hosted its annual Summer Open House this past weekend, and it was a joy to meet and talk with so many visitors from different locales around the country – and the world.
Spending time drifting from show to show, shop to shop, and in and out of various crowds, I found folks from Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee, Florida, California, Texas, Wisconsin, many parts of Michigan, and as far away as New Zealand. Our little town by the lake has a vast footprint, and thanks to those at the Downtown Management Board channeling their energies toward great festivals, the City of Petoskey employees, the business owners, and the citizens, everyone feels welcome and returns year after year.
This certainly ’tis the season for our returning resorters, vacationers, and Snowbirds. Downtown Petoskey will once again become abuzz with activity beginning early every morning among the coffee shops and ending late into the evening at dining establishments on every block. And with two nearby airports, Harbor Springs and Pellston, world travelers have little difficulty finding their way from abroad.
Hints to parking for the downtown area are many. One is to head just out of downtown and find free parking up East Mitchell, or a couple blocks either way on Bay, Lake, Michigan or State streets. There is also ample parking in the harbor area below town that is a pretty walk up through the gateway under US-31 where you arrive in front of Petoskey Plastics. If you find the premium meter parking directly downtown, the time is cheap.
Finally, an easy hint: Walk or bike into the city, or perhaps even sail or motor into the marina. Pathways are plentiful, and the harbor offers first class docking for any boat.
However, and from wherever, you venture, Downtown Petoskey is ready to meet and greet you with open arms. Enjoy the fun while visiting, and relax. There’s no rush.
