With an abundance of beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline, oft’ cantankerous clouds, and a downtown from days gone by, what better place than to host Petoskey’s annual Art in the Park. This one-day event on Saturday, July 15th, includes a juried best of show, and is a continuation of the summer season of festivals in Downtown Petoskey.
For over 30 years, upwards of 130 booths blossom on the green grass of Pennsylvania Park, so stroll the entire length of the park from Mitchell Street to Bay Street and discover the artistry of not just locals, but from many who travel the country, and make Petoskey their highlight trip.
There are jewelers, sculptors, plyers of pottery, and metal smiths. You’ll find painters using oil, watercolor, acrylic, and pretty much any medium possible. Photographers abound with elements of study the range from barns, flowers, wildlife, and through the scenery that surrounds us.
Some returning favorites are the fanciful yard sculptures done in various mediums that dot the walkways, and many guests find their favorite jeweler’s booth so they may add a piece to an already prized collection.
An added component to the art fair is Petoskey’s now famous Where’s Waldo contest. Downtown merchants hide a Waldo in their place of business, and it’s up to you to find where they have it. You must stop by the Downtown office at 216 Park Avenue (on Pennsylvania Park) to pick up your game information and the list of participating businesses. Prizes are available and the fun of visiting the establishments makes this a very special quest.
And that’s not all! Petoskey Rocks happens the night before the Art Fair! On Friday, July 14th, come downtown and enjoy live music from May Erlewine beginning at 7:00 p.m. Prior to that, there are free carriage rides around downtown, and later, the movie, Moana, in Pennsylvania Park starting at dark. Various downtown stores and eateries have food and refreshments available so don’t worry about carting coolers and packs.
This is a complete weekend for anyone who chooses to visit or partake in Downtown Petoskey’s Art in the Park. Enjoy, and remember, every weekend in Downtown Petoskey is a vacation.
